Control Loop Optimisation and PID Tuning

We have many years of experience working in a process environment and have been involved in the optimisation of most of the common PID Control loops. Many people assume that PID Loop Tuning is simply a matter of using whatever method they have learnt at college, or have purchased PID Tuning Software, to come up with a set of values for each of the three terms. We consider PID Loop Tuning to be the “icing on the cake” and really should form the final action of a more detailed optimisation of a PID Control Loop in which all aspects of the loop, valves, transmitters, interactions etc, are considered.

Combined with our working knowledge of programmable systems, we use laptop-based PID Tuning Software tests to uncover PID Control loop problems such as hysteresis, incorrect valve sizing, over filtering of the process variable etc. Having determined the system dynamics we use powerful analysis tools and, where necessary, bespoke software-based models to optimise the final tuning parameters.
