TiPS (Alarm Management Software)
Most industrial groups acknowledge the "EEMUA Guide" as a key source of best practice and design information relating to alarm management systems. The four core principles, commonly known as Alarm Rationalisation, of this guide are:
- The alarm system should be designed to meet the user’s needs.
- The purpose of the alarm system should be to protect the safety of people, the environment and plant equipment.
- The performance of the alarm system should be assessed.
- Every alarm should be justified and properly engineered.
The key metrics of the EEMUA Guide are:-
- Average alarm rate < 1 alarm every 10 minutes per operator.
- Flood alarm rate < 10 alarms every 10 minutes per operator.
- Standing Alarms < 10
- Disabled Alarms < 30
To have any chance of meeting these targets, you must have a plan that defines the goals, metrics, schedule, budget and resources. This is called an Alarm Philosophy document.
